WBW: 10 Concerts I Wish I Could Have Seen
I wrote a little blurb in the Confessions of an Uncle Fan
column yesterday about how dedicated international fans are when their
favorite groups are visiting their country. That's one of the things
that I missed as a K-pop fan back in the late 1990's because
international tours or concerts basically didn't exist, especially if
you didn't happen to live in LA or New York (H.O.T. did visit Washington, DC back in 1997 but even that was in a high school auditorium - Fin.K.L visited Atlanta in 2000 as well but Joohyun & Lee Jin had
VISA issues and couldn't make the trip). At the time, before the
prominence of the internet, K-pop wasn't generating the kind of revenues
or drawing the huge number of international fans as they are now so it
just wasn't an option.
Today's Way Back Wednesday is
focused on the 10 groups or singers that I would have loved to have seen
live in concert if given the chance. Most of these groups are repeats
from other articles but some might actually surprise you.
"I OMITTED THE OTHER INFO"
"I OMITTED THE OTHER INFO"
SMTown, Christmas 2000
Pretty specific huh? The reason I chose this was because this was the last SMTown that included H.O.T. because by the following Christmas, H.O.T had disbanded and only Moon Hee Jun and Kangta were still with the company. Plus, the 2000 version also included BoA, Shinhwa, Fly to the Sky, S.E.S, and Yoo Young Jin.domingo, 22 de septiembre de 2013

WBW: Top 10 Songs from 10 Years Ago
Something I always wanted to do on Way Back Wednesday was to
devote one post a month and revisit the biggest hits from the same
month, 10 years ago. I know most of you like reading about more recent
groups but I think there's a strong enough base of old school K-pop fans
who like the older jams and don't mind a trip down memory lane. Plus,
10 years isn't a huge amount of time so my guess is that many of you
will be able to recognize the singers and songs on these lists.
This
week's Way Back Wednesday will travel back to September of 2003. For
some, it's just a reminder of the music we grew up with and for others,
it might be an educational experience. Enjoy!
JTL - "Without Your Love"
From the 2nd album of the group formerly known as 'The H.O.T members that SM
didn't want to keep', JTL had their share of fans but just didn't have
the staying power which was a shame. I still can't understand what SM
was thinking at the time. You're making money hand over fist... just
work it out with everyone and keep the train moving.

Kangta brings laughs as he recalls a few drunken incidents involving fans
Kangta had viewers cracking up on the latest installment of 'Radio Star' with his guest appearance and various stories from his past.
During
one segment of the show, Kangta reminisced on his past when he used to
have quite a drinking habit. He revealed that he started drinking a lot
when he was going through some tough times.
When
the MCs asked if the rumors about him throwing dried peppers at his
fans are true, Kangta hilariously admitted that it is. He apparently
stood at his balcony and started to throw dried peppers at the fans
outside as he said, "I've received so much from you, but all I have to give you right now are these."
It
turns out, in his drunken state, Kangta remembered how his mom would
always tell him 'these are precious' regarding the peppers she'd pick
from their yard and hang out to dry. So with his mom's words echoing in
his head, Kangta decided the best way he could pay his fans back for all
their love was to give them something that was 'precious' as well, and
grabbed the dried peppers to throw over his balcony.
His
drunken nights weren't always all laughs though as he mentioned that
there was once a time when he got so drunk after going through some
tough time that he ended up falling asleep on the streets. When morning
came about, people started to recognize the drunken Kangta, who was
still dressed in formal wear and had his hair done, sitting on the
sidewalk. Realizing that he was being recognized, he tried to hide his
face, but more and more people started to gather.
That's
when a H.O.T fan came to the rescue. She apparently even grabbed a taxi
for him to help him back home. However, once inside the taxi, still
drunk, Kangta revealed that he told his fan 'my house disappeared' with
his eyes watery, bringing his story to a close with laughs on set.

WBW: Old School Artists We Want as a Mentor
One of the better shows on Korean cable recently was 'Lee Hyori's X Unni' which featured the K-pop diva as she tried to mentor the talented but underachieving girl group SPICA. SPICA is under the same label as Lee Hyori and while they're recognized as amazingly talented, they have not been able to crack through to the upper echelon of girl groupdom. I thought it was great watching Hyori as she tapped into her vast reservoir of knowledge and tried to push the little group that could towards the right direction.
That got me thinking, if I were an up-and-coming K-pop group, which old school K-pop star would I want as a mentor? Today's Way Back Wednesday will feature some artists who I feel would have the most to offer. There are many who are actively doing just that and others who aren't in the spotlight but all have something to offer.
Moon Hee Jun
I've always been intrigued by Moon Hee Jun after I found out that he actually created the dances for the H.O.T. hit "Warrior's Descendent" and S.E.S' "I'm Your Girl" among others. I just thought it was interesting that he had the skill set to come up with these iconic dances. On top of that, even though his rock metal career was a painful failure, I like the fact that he even tried that type of music. Moon Hee Jun seems to be in a good place right now and I think he would be perfect to help mentor and shape a young group just starting out.Cr:http://www.allkpop.com/
