(Tony) WBW: Korean-American Style

"I OMITTED THE OTHERS INFORMATION"

Today’s Way Back Wednesday will feature some of the most influential artists from back in the day who lived in America before making it big. Some were born in America, others only lived here for a few years, but they all helped make K-pop what it is today.

The Designated “English Rapper” – Tony An/Shin Hyesung, Andy Lee, Eric Mun/Brian Joo

Each of the members were part of the first generation of SM Entertainment idol singers and were all discovered as part of SM’s auditions in the U.S. Brian was the only member of this group to have lived primarily on the East Coast in New Jersey as the other four were all part of the huge Los Angeles Korean-American community. Lee Soo Man‘s vision of creating teen groups based on American music required that the groups have members who could speak English and so SM was the first to designate certain members as “English rappers”. However, there has always been a question as to the level of proficiency of these rappers and you just need to listen to Tony An’s English rap in the song “Warrior’s Descendant ” which is still the stuff of legends.

Moon Hee Jun Talks about How He Broke Up with His Girlfriend for His Fans on ′The Beatles Code′

Moon Hee Jun will get talking about H.O.T. and his unwavering love for his fans on the next episode of The Beatles Code 2 to air on February 18.

The singer confessed that he once engaged in a fierce dance battle with fellow H.O.T. member Jang Woo Hyuk in their trainee days.
"I danced in a routine that didn′t have any overlapping moves for exactly an hour and 10 minutes in order to win against Jang Woo Hyuk," he said. "Later, I had bounced around so much my belt became loose."

He added, "I can′t say who won over the other, but I believe Jang Woo Hyuk is better in technique while I′m better in creativity."

He also talked about how he once broke up with his girlfriend for his fans.

He said, "Once, my girlfriend asked me to make our relationship public if I really think she is more precious than my fans. My family and my fans were the ones who looked after me in my time of need. I broke up with her because my fans came before even my loving girlfriend."

He also gave advice on love relationships to celebrities, saying, "I believe it would be better for celebrities to keep relationships secret for their lover and their fans."

Moon Hee Jun will appear with Boyfriend on the day′s episode.

Moon Hee Jun opens up about the setback he faced due to anti-fans’ verbal attacks

On the February 12th broadcast of KBS 2TV‘s’ ‘Moonlight Prince‘, former H.O.T member Moon Hee Jun opened up about the setback he faced due to verbal attacks from anti-fans.
Moon Hee Jun shared, “As I started band music, I formed a small dream to win an award for the rock category at an awards ceremony. That’s when it started. I quit and suffered a breakdown. I thought that I should quit doing music. People have to like my music, so I can continue to do music. Whatever I say, there is always a misunderstanding, so I stopped doing broadcasts altogether. My family and friends would also tell me to quit. They said they were afraid that because I was so tired, I might become a different person.”
Brave Brothers consoled the singer and stated, “It’s impressive that you were able to overcome that pain. I always wanted to say this. A hoobae who I used to know was laughing while reading malicious posts about Moon Hee Jun. I asked this person if he/she hated Moon Hee Jun, and he said they were just looking at it because it was fun. I was very shocked. These people don’t think. They only do it because others are doing it.”
Moon Hee Jun continued, “After my group split up, I didn’t want to show my weak side. To cover up my anxious heart, I thought that I should show an overly confident image, but that made me appear egotistical.”
“When you listen to [my music], if it’s not worth rejecting, I hope you like it. If it’s mediocre, I hope you listen to the next song. If I act like myself for 50 minutes, I feel anxious for 10 minutes. Still,” revealing how his past encounter with anti-fans still haunts him to this day.

WBW: SM vs. DSP

I frequently mention the great idol wars of the 1990’s when the first generation of idol stars were part of fan fueled rivalries pitting groups against each other. While there were many different players, at the center of the frenzy stood the two most important companies of that era: SM Entertainment and DSP Media. These two companies have had an interesting relationship over the years as SM has always been viewed almost as a big brother to DSP’s little brother in the way they have developed and debuted groups. However, there is no doubt that each has helped shaped the landscape of K-pop. On today’s Way Back Wednesday, we’ll look at how the rivalry between the two companies began and how it’s still continuing to this day with their contributions to the world of K-pop both past and present.

H.O.T. vs. Sechskies – Rise of the Boy Bands

H.O.T and Sechskies defined the SM/DSP rivalry of the late 1990’s. Lee Soo Man of SM Entertainment changed K-pop forever with how he created and marketed the first boy group in H.O.T. The strategy of DSP Media (Daesung Enterprise at the time) CEO Lee Ho Young was to respond by creating what was initially viewed as a copycat group but Sechskies had their own distinct style and personality. Rival fans have always been a part of Korean music but it was the rise of the boy bands that led to a new generation of fandom with specific colored balloons (white vs. yellow) and synchronized chants (I had a friend who used have them ALL memorized). Much of this activity is still part of the fan experience today. I think the rivalry existed more in the minds of fans than between the actual groups but the popularity of the two groups probably opened the eyes for the entire music industry about how powerful the (then) new generation of music fan could be. From H.O.T and Sechskies came the basic outline of how to market an idol group: showcasing individual personalities but always as part of the larger group. It’s still exactly how most companies operate today.
